Physicists think of light and energy as made up out of tiny parts called photons. They are like little runners that run across space. They are produced when charged particles such as electrons and protons collide with other electrons or positrons. The counter particles when collide then produces photons. For example the most significant source of photons is the sun. The sun emits energy in the form of photons through empty space to Earth, which we perceive as light and heat. The absence of the sun and its photons would render our world a cold, dark place!
The majority of photons are not created equally and this is an important process to see. There is one called spontaneous emission. This occurs when an electron at a higher energy level returns to one of the lower levels, emitting a photon. Picture a balloon that has been inflated—now, imagine it being popped—it releases energy! This process is called stimulated emission and is a second way that photons are produced. And that is exactly what occurs in lasers. Whereas, in Lasers the photons travel in one direction causing other atoms to release more photon. This concentrates the light into an intense and powerful beam, like what we can see when a laser pointer shines!
Many of the best lights we have are in our labs and hospitals. An intense beam source could be performed by a synchrotron, so-called as one very bright light. It is a unique machine because it generates light through accelerators of electrons almost at the speed of light and curves thanks to magnets. And this generates many, many number of photons that researchers could observe to look at various materials and tiny living things in very small sizes. It is like scientists have been given a light-based super-magnifying glass that allows them to see things at sizes smaller than our brains can even comprehend.
Only thing is… photons are very odd balls and they come with some peculiarities! No weight is revealed but energy. This means they can travel light. Interestingly, photons can also be both particles and waves (the quantum of a wave). They reflect colors and each color has a different wavelength. This is because light of different colors travel in different ways—red light, for instance, has a longer wavelength that blue light so when red and blue lights are emitted together they move at separate paces. And this combination of colors is what makes us see a rainbow!
